"It's a hot summer morning in these southern California mountains. There's no trail to follow, and our destination's exact location isn't on any map. Why? Because the local Chumash—or what's left of them—have tried to preserve their ancestors' rock art by keeping their whereabouts mostly unknown. Making my way through the thick mountain brush, the vegetation eventually opens up to reveal a long rock overhang—and there, splashed across the overhang's ceiling, are scores of centuries-old petroglyphs."
